Ökologisch betrachtet war das Entwickeln von analogem Film zu dessen Blütezeit ziemlich dreckig. Unmengen von giftigen Chemikalien und Schwermetallen (vor allem Silber) kamen zum Einsatz und mussten entsorgt werden. Für diese Prob- lematik ist – gerade in der DIY-Szene – inzwischen ein solides Bewusstsein ent- standen und es werden umweltverträglichere Mittel eingesetzt. Einer der belieb- testen ökologischen Entwickler für Schwarz-Weiss-Film ist Caffenol, bestehend aus Instantkaffee und Waschsoda. Da seine Bestandteile in jedem Supermarkt zu kaufen sind, gilt er auch als alternativer Entwickler, der allen zugänglich ist.

Ecologically, developing analog film was pretty dirty in its heyday. Huge amounts of toxic chemicals and heavy metals (especially silver) were used and had to be disposed of. Now, there is a solid awareness of this issue – especially in the DIY scene – and more environmentally friendly agents are being used.
One of the most popular ecological developers for black-and-white film is Caffe- nol, consisting of instant coffee and washing soda. Since its ingredients can be bought in any department store, it is also considered an alternative developer accessible to everybody.
In this workshop, we will experiment with Caffenol and other natural developers, manually exploring alternative ways of developing film. The sustainable alterna- tives also offer different aesthetic possibilities and new aspects of what effects can be created with the film emulsion.
