VERSO
Dear members of the Mensa Council, VERSO would like to present some positions below that are important to students regarding the new cafeteria. This concerns less specific requests regarding suppliers or the quality of the food, but rather some general suggestions about the offerings as well as fundamental demands that would be important regardless of the providing party. We kindly ask the Mensa Council to consider these points in the process and to incorporate them into the requirement catalog for the tender. We sincerely thank the Mensa Council for this.

OPENING HOURS
With regard to opening hours, there are two areas that need to be considered: a constantly available catering option and catering during lunchtime. The Momento currently partially fulfills the first category and has developed positively in this regard from our perspective. However, the opening hours could be extended to 08:00-20:00, as there are some courses during the earlier evening on weekdays. Additionally, the offerings on weekends should be expanded, as many students also work in the Toni-Areal on Saturday and Sunday. The Saturday opening hours are not optimal, and students urgently wish for a catering option on Sunday, as the alternatives are very limited then.
The lunch offering would be desirable from a student perspective to be kept open at least until 14:30. In various departments, there are often modules that last from 10:00 to 14:00 without a lunch break, which leads to some students only having the limited options of the Momento available (or having to leave class early). An extended opening of the lunch offering would achieve a lot in this regard.

TO MEAT OR NOT TO MEAT
In the context of ZHdK, there are many people who want to forgo meat and just as many vegans. Accordingly, offering two meat menus and one vegetarian menu is definitely a wrong offering at our art school. The ZFV has increasingly tried to vary this offering—however, for the students, it is too unpredictable. A vegan menu is not always available, but a meat or fish menu usually is. We would like to encourage questioning this assumption.
Furthermore, vegan and meatless menus are sometimes very thoughtless and do not adequately address the basic needs of a balanced diet. We are not trying to belittle the ZFV's offerings; rather, we want to encourage what a kitchen at ZHdK can be. VERSO believes that a maximum of one meat option is sufficient, and the focus should be placed on good vegan and vegetarian cuisine. The selection of foods is also about positioning and political alignment, consciously eating healthily and sustainably. In our opinion, two meat menus are not a step in that direction.
We would like to further encourage a variable meat offering. This could, for example, be implemented with vegan/vegetarian menus and variable animal

PRICES
For us, the most difficult aspect to assess and yet a very important point in our stance. The lunch menus are too expensive for students. We notice this not only from our own experience but mainly from the numerous complaints, indignations, and help calls that have reached us as a student organization, especially throughout this academic year. The glance into the other establishments of ZFV at universities and colleges also evokes confusion. At the University of Zurich, the vegan or vegetarian menu costs CHF 5.80. The same applies to a large part of the snacks, which were subsidized a few years ago; nowadays, there is usually no distinction in prices for internal/external and students and staff are no longer differentiated at all. This was never clearly communicated and has led to much misunderstanding among the students.
For the students, an affordable dining and catering offer is the most important aspect. An affordable vegan/vegetarian option is, in our view, sufficient. Paying a surcharge for the consumption of meat and other unsustainable products would lead to a decrease in the consumption of these products, and regarding sustainability, a political signal could be set in the right direction.
Additionally, a model with at least one very inexpensive menu each could be conceivable. This can be simpler than the other dishes and could, for example, consist of leftovers, but still offer everyone with a small budget the opportunity for a warm lunch.
Quality is important; however, the students mainly want to be able to regularly afford the dining options at Toni-Areal. Many students only “treat” themselves to eating at the cafeteria occasionally. Buying a lunch menu at the cafeteria should not be a luxury for the students.
