VERSO

The university leadership has been discussing a radical reduction of access times to the ZHdK for university members in recent weeks. As part of the "stabilization initiative" of the ZHdK, which was launched for financial savings at the university, the costs for electricity and security personnel should be reduced. Specifically, the premises - previously unrestricted access for university members - will only be open during the week from 07:00 AM to 10:00 PM and on weekends from 08:00 AM to 08:00 PM. VERSO wants to express its clear opposition to a reduction of opening hours for university members with this position paper. The proposed night closure has far-reaching consequences, especially for students. For this reason, we are disappointed with the university leadership's approach in this matter. VERSO was not directly informed of the proposal for the night closure and was not involved in the discussion. We wish for the university leadership to involve students in this process and proactively seek dialogue with VERSO. VERSO is aware of the difficult financial situation of the university. However, we must point out how significantly this change would affect the daily lives of students and ask the university leadership to refrain from restricting access to the premises for university members for the following reasons.

LOSS OF A LOCATION ADVANTAGE

The outstanding infrastructure of ZHdK is a central factor for all students in their work. Having access to the facilities of the university at any time offers students a range of opportunities for their studies. For many students, this was a reason to choose to study at ZHdK. With the loss of this opportunity, ZHdK loses attractiveness as a place of study for future students.

DENSE SCHEDULES

Dense schedules during the day are a reality for students from various fields of study. Since the introduction of Major_minor, teaching days have sometimes become even fuller and longer; for example, minor courses can last until 9:00 PM on Fridays.

Part of an art study program includes not only plenary, group, and individual instruction but also individual engagement and practice in one's own medium. For this, time and space must be found or created in addition to regular class hours.

For many music students, it is routine to practice several hours a day. This is only possible, apart from the classes, if the practice rooms are accessible in the evenings, at night, and early in the morning, especially when concerts, competitions, or exams are approaching. In the DDK, classes usually run until 6:00 PM, but often until 9:15 PM. DDK students thus depend on late evening hours and weekends to rehearse and prepare projects, auditions, and events that are considered part of their training by the university.

ASYNCHRONOUS WORK PHASES

We consider the proposal to extend the opening hours during intensive work phases upon request for individual students to be administratively very cumbersome and, in a fair manner, not feasible. Who decides which exhibition, which performance, which submission, which piece, or which audition is important enough to gain extended access to the facilities?

The timings of deadlines or intense work phases vary significantly across different degree programs. Therefore, in our view, it is not possible to lift the closure of the facilities for university members at night during certain times of the year in order to mitigate the consequences for students.

SPACE SHORTAGE IN THE TONI DISTRICT

A major challenge for individual practice and pursuing projects during studies is the space shortage in the Toni District and at Gessnerallee. In particular, students without their own studios or workplaces depend on being able to work in the empty classrooms during off-peak hours. This particularly affects the Master's program in Cultural Critique from the DKV.

The rooms on the 5th and 6th floors are important practice rooms for music students, as they provide infrastructure that is only sparsely available in the rooms on the 1st floor. However, these rooms are occupied by classes during the day. Similarly, the concert halls can only be used in the evenings and at night for any sound and video recordings due to regular occupancy.

Due to the high occupancy of the university's facilities, it becomes impossible for students, with or without their own workspaces, to pursue projects during the day that require space, undisturbed focus, and quiet. The option to move to the night is therefore central for such projects with specific requirements. Additionally, students with concentration difficulties may rely on the facilities at less frequented times.

CREATIVITY

Creative thinking and action do not only take place during office hours. The students of ZHdK have different times of day when they can engage and work creatively in a fruitful manner. For some, this period is at night or early in the morning. Closing the facilities to university members overnight would significantly hinder these students in their independent artistic and design practices.

COMPATIBILITY OF STUDIES, PAID AND CARE WORK

ZHdK still does not officially offer part-time studies. Combining studies with paid and care work is already a major challenge for many students in the current situation. A closure of ZHdK at night would make the difficulties of reconciling other commitments with studies even greater, as self-study phases could be less flexibly arranged and must be aligned with access to infrastructure. We hope that the university continues to develop in the interest of accessibility for all students and considers aspects of equal opportunity in this decision.

ZHdK CREATES SPACES

An important component of an art study is also what happens outside of class hours. It includes formats that take place in the evening, must be dismantled late, and have no clear ending. These are panels and concerts, openings and performances, shows and screenings, and interdisciplinary projects. But also events for networking students within a program or department and across departmental boundaries. By making their facilities available to students around the clock, ZHdK provides students the opportunity to create their own spaces for exchange, engagement, negotiation, networking, deepening, and expansion.
