VERSO

The developments of the past four weeks concern not only the employees of ZHdK but also us as the student representation. The decisions made in the areas of mediation and transdisciplinarity, as well as the dismissal of the DKV leadership, were incomprehensible proceedings for us students, particularly those of the DKV. With this statement, we would like to highlight some grievances in the process from the perspective of VERSO ZHdK and the student body.

  1. MISSING COMMUNICATION

The communication of the directional decisions (innovation clusters, inter- and transdisciplinarity, mediation, offerings of the DKV, generativity, and open university) was not sent to the students or to VERSO on September 8 or thereafter. The first communication from the Rectorate to the university public occurred only on September 17 – as a preventive reaction to subsequent press reports. The fact that the HSL refers to information flows through the department conferences of the departments is insufficient: The students would then receive relevant information only weeks after the staff. Furthermore, VERSO is not the spokesperson for the HSL. Important decisions should be communicated directly and transparently to the students. Unclear communication leads to unnecessary confusion and unrest.

  2. INTEREST OF STUDENTS IN THE DIRECTIONAL DECISIONS

The petition from VERSO DKV regarding the MTR clearly expressed the great concerns and issues of the students affected. An invitation to a conversation with affected students or a statement from the HSL recognizing the concerns of the students and attempting to clarify them did not occur. The directional decisions affect the students in different ways: The inaccurate description of the MTR and the future of the DKV creates uncertainty among students about the future significance of their degrees. How does ZHdK ensure the value of the degrees? Additionally, many students have a fundamental interest in content-structural changes affecting teaching. This also applies to processes outside their own department. If higher education policy developments are not communicated to students, the HSL misses an important perspective for its directional decisions. The
directional decisions made significantly influence the decisions regarding further studies at ZHdK.

  3. VDKV PETITION “DEFEND THE MTR AT ZHDK”

VERSO ZHDK supports the demands put forth by VERSO DKV in the petition and emphasizes the urgency of a statement from the HSL. The VDKV petition has garnered over 1200 signatures within 8 days, including prominent names such as Kim de l'Horizon, Shirana Shabahzi, and Diedrich Diedrichsen. The signatures
encompass a wide range of theorists, professors, artists, and students. We demand that the HSL recognizes the petition and its content as a legitimate means of expression for the students. The petition has the potential to serve as an effective tool to strengthen transdisciplinarity at our

school at the cantonal political level.

Note (12.11.25): The petition was submitted to Karin Mairitsch on October 28, 2025. It received a total of 1244 signatures and was online for one month.

  1. JOB ADVERTISEMENT DEPARTMENT MANAGEMENT DKV

Andreas Vogel submitted his resignation at the end of July. It has now been more than two months since the position of Department Head of the DKV has not been advertised. The reasons provided by the HSL regarding the current restructuring seem contradictory and insufficient. If the removal of responsibility for a dossier does not affect the percentage of the Department Head's position and its other areas of responsibility, it remains unclear why the position has not been advertised to this day. In connection with the directional decisions (innovation cluster, mediation), one inevitably comes to the assumption that a dissolution of the DKV cannot be ruled out. VERSO emphasizes the importance of representation and leadership of the entire DKV during the current discourses and developments.

Note (12.11.25): Andreas Vogel has been released from duty as of October 31, 2025, until the end of his notice period.

  2. LANGUAGE

The evasive language currently used by the HSL to justify decisions makes it impossible to maintain a healthy culture of dialogue and participation. Vague formulations and the insistence on the term “directional decision” make it impossible for students to express criticism. This terminology allows the HSL to make decisions first and only later enable a discussion to circumvent a truly outcome-oriented process. A substantive engagement with the topics of (trans)disciplinarity and mediation must occur before any form of decision is made. As
a prerequisite for further decisions, we demand an evidence-based report on the assertion that inter- and transdisciplinarity are already sufficiently present in all departments.

  3. TYPE OF DECISION-MAKING PROCESSES

Despite the outcome-oriented language, the directional decisions should be questioned regarding their content. Since the directional decisions involve significant changes, they must be justified. It cannot be the case that experts are consulted only afterward, evaluations are completed, and conferences on thematic areas are held. This contradicts a substantive engagement not driven by interest politics. This way of dealing with its employees, staff, and students by the HSL is concerning. The mission statement states that students take “responsibility for co-designing teaching and learning processes.” The corporate culture is described as based on “open communication, social responsibility, and a participative leadership style.” At the current time, we do not see these principles fulfilled.

  4. PREVENTION OF SUBSTANTIVE DISCUSSIONS THROUGH
    RESTRUCTURING

In addition to the directional decisions, further comprehensive restructuring of our university is also planned. Starting further restructuring of the entire university in the context of stabilization measures appears not only irresponsible but also strategically contradictory.
The university has just completed the costly and disruption-prone transition to the major-minor system. This reform has already significantly burdened the ZHdK financially and has not been positively received everywhere. The system still requires substantial revision and adjustment. From the students’ perspective, the major-minor system is far from concluded. One reform process after another paralyzes operations and forces all stakeholders into constant reactivity. The stakeholders are interdependent. If already now employees of the university are leaving due to increasing uncertainty, we see the quality in teaching and the substantive engagement with restructuring processes acutely endangered.

As a student representation, we demand:

  • Clear communication regarding the direction decisions to all students

  • An evaluation-based justification for the direction decisions of the HSL retreat

  • Inclusion of experts from the affected departments in the further
    decision-making processes

  • The immediate announcement of the position of Department Head DKV

  • A budget report for the upcoming restructuring processes
